The public can now pre-order Microsoft Windows Vista from overclockers!

Purchasing Vista doesn't seem so bad now - especially as you can pick up an OEM version of Vista Ultimate for £135. A small fortune, but a bargain compared to the retail copy prices.

Will you be buying Vista soon? Or even pre-ordering it today? I'll still be holding back, probably until Easter time for the upgrade.

That's a great price compared to retail, how come? Tust means its missing packaging etc right?

If you opt for the OEM, then you'll have to purchase it with hardware as you buy it - but I think something as little as a mouse counts. Also, I don't believe you get any support from Microsoft - not that it would be worth having anyway. Finally, it can only be installed on the one PC, whereas the retail editions you can install on the one, then upgrade to a new PC and re-install.

Well im holding fire but they are cheaper then i first thought. Go for the ultimate or home premium version forget all the rest. Also the real expensive version of ultimate is about 400 and the OEM 135 one of the reasons is that the expensive version includes both the 32bit & 64bit in the same package and you get to choose at install which version you want; where as the cheaper versions come as either 32bit or 64bit. As everyone has a 64bit comp now no piont on going for the expensive version. To me OEM just means no packaging. I am not buying it untill i upgrade and that will be in 2020. Just wait to see if some one cracks it first.

It's been cracked... more than 3 times now. But each time, Microsoft is quick on the ball and 'un-cracks' it. The most recent attempt involved running a dummy activation server on your PC, tricking it into activation.

Check out http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/editions/default.mspx for the differences between the versions. As you say, either Premium or Ultimate. As for 32/64, I don't see why you'd try and run Vista on an older 32-bit chip.

Eta for my PC - March/April 2007. I'll dual-boot until I can live with Vista 100% - tonight I'll begin the migration process - though I've got to burn 30 South Park DVDs to clear my HDDs...

Looks like one retailer has made an error and they've got Ultimate edition at £85:

I might order that before they realise the mistake and correct it...

I've not heard back from Anglian since ordering the mis-priced Ultimate edition. Tomorrow evening though, I'll finally install Vista RC1 (I've not got a copy of RC2 to hand) and keep that running until I end up purchasing the full jobber.
