For those of you that have been in hibernation over the past few months - Windows Vista was released on January 30th (Tuesday). You can read about my Vista experience if you've missed it too - the prologue and the aftermath.

As today was the best day of the month (being pay day) I decided to purchase an OEM copy of Windows Vista Ultimate - for the bargain price of £111.57 (you've got about 15 minutes left at the time of posting, to grab it at this price from aria.co.uk).

Alongside the software, which is in fact the first copy of Windows I've purchased separately, I decided to invest in another 2 x 250GB Hard-Drives, which will bring my fileserver's total storage to about 1.66TB. Afterall, most retailers require you to purchase a hardware component or system at the same time as forking out for OEM software.

Let me know if and when you'll be purchasing Vista - along with your chosen version. I'll keep you updated with how the 'real' install goes. I'm planning on running it alongside XP Pro SP2 for a few months until I'm 100% converted.

Oh i forgot, does anybody want a free Mac get one here http://osx.portraitofakite.com/

LordByron

OEM version? Man Im not sure about that, only use for 1 motherboard? im confused. On bit tech they said there is a loophole to get a vista upgrade disc and install the whole of vista off it without needing to bother with xp. Oh and is someone imitating LordByron to get me on some lame website? I heard that desktop video background feature was added to this retail version of vista so i guess it wasnt in the beta.

Adamskii

Ok i looked at the website, i get it now ;) Mac is Wac

If you gots a 3G phone you might want to try this http://www.trustedreviews.com/mobile-phones/news/2007/02/02/Fring-Client-Enables-Skype-Googe-Talk-Over-3G/p1

LordByron

Ah that's what you were on about - thanks mans! Though it appears it only works on Nokia phones.

I opted for the OEM as I only need Vista for my main PC and it does allow for upgrades - simply ring Microsoft and they'll re-activate it for you. I've heard many stories about how nice they are over the phone. Afterall, at only £111 - almost half of the price of the upgrade/third of the full retail version, you could easily purchase an additional copy if needed in the future.

Matt

Only £111! thats alot of money for anything. When they end the support for XP i am seriously going to consider a Linux OS unless the price seriously comes down. I mean i wouldnt mind paying it as you will get your moneys worth but i dont like Microsoft trying to bum us all by doing this restricted install thing.

LordByron

If everyone who has a computer bought vista for £20 Microsoft would sill make sooo much money.

I don't understand the upgrade idea. So if I think right this computer I have is shit Im going to throw it away. Then i buy a whole new computer & im then actually installing vista on another computer (which I cant). So i ring microsoft and say no its the same computer because it has the same floppy drive, ive just upgraded everything else and so they will say ok fair enough?

My beef is i got 3 computers, 1 i use now, 1 at home and one piece of crap that i spit at. I need a OS on all to be able to use them. Microsoft says vista is the last Operating system they will make ( i dont believe this buy hey) This means this OS wont change for years and years, in which time i will chew through more then one computer. On all these old computers im going to want a OS installed so i can actually use the things. So no vista? Even tho ive simply been upgrading but happen to have enough spare parts to maintain an old full computer. So if i bought retail and let everyone at my home install Vista that would be fine because I phone and lie to them and say, "yeah all the computers are mine" so thats fine?

LOL my ramblings makes no sense, ignore it.^

Adamskii

Ah, I know what I meant now. I was asking at what point of upgrading parts does Microsoft say, "actually you've built a new computer"?

Adamskii

No idea, but I've taken that gamble - saving myself a few hundred pounds in the process. £111 is a lot, and I'll be purchasing an OEM of Home Premium at a later date.

Matt

you gonna go 32 or 64 bit?

Id get Linux over Vista for the price issue, but...... I can't do it. Im waaaay to much of a games addict and I can see myself being ever soooo tempted with Directx10 games. My prediction is that my resolve will weaken and ill buy Vista when I am earning some decent money and I sniff the bliss of Crysis.

Adamskii

Oh yeah, tell me how it is with pirated software, not that I have or use any.

Adamskii

64-bit, though the retail editions come with both. I don't see the need for 32-bit as my whole PC supports 64-bit and I've already tested it working with the 64-bit version of RC1. People are complaining about the lack of 64-bit driver support, but it's because they've got older crappy PCs.

Matt

On a side-note I am planning a completely open-source/free setup sometime soon - as there are many decent alternatives to the popular software we know and use, for Linux. If my mini-itx PC is returned to me anytime soon, it'll be running Ubuntu server as a web-server (completely free) and I've got an old 900MHz Duron which I'll run Ubuntu on with many free/open-source apps.

The only problem with Linux is, as you say Adamskii - games. Sure, there are emulators and ways of running the games within Linux, but nothing as simple as Windows itself. And I can't find a decent alternative to Dreamweaver - I could lose all the other programs bar it.

Matt

Microsoft played a clever card with regards to the games. If you tested 64 bit then good stuff, I knew you got both on disc, it was just that I read on bit-tech that they have to recommend 32 bit because people run all sorts of hardware (old and new) id assume that everything bar maybe my cheapo and almost unused tv card would work 64bit.

Adamskii

You're probably better off getting a new TV-Card anyway if you want to take advantage of the built-in media centre features of Vista.

I'm thinking later down the line we'll see 64-bit only applications and games, which you'll regret if you purchase a 32-bit OEM now and then have to buy a 64-bit OEM at a later date. I suppose that's the only thing the retail version has going for it.

Matt

oh, so the OEM version doesnt have both versions! i didn't realise that. Can you play old games on a 64 bit vista then? should i wait and ask you this when you have it ready?

adamskii

You can, 64-bit is backwards compatible with 32-bit applications AFAIK.

I'll do a complete write-up of 64-bit Vista and my experiences this weekend if you want, as it should arrive today or tomorrow...

Matt

Just a bit more info on the whole OEM activation thing:

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2088385,00.asp

Which says you can pretty much change anything, but you will have to re-activate. I'm still awaiting delivery of my copy of Vista Ultimate 64-bit OEM...

Matt

I like this bit: The only question that you must answer correctly (no) in order to receive the activation code is: "Is this version of Windows on more than one PC?" I guess that question catches a lot of Americans out.

Adamskiis

I thought this was a decent walk-thru of Vista: http://uk.gamespot.com/features/6165439/index.html

Adamskiis

I suppose you can't really get a guide wrong, as all the major magazines and websites have written a feature on Vista - and most are worth reading.

I'm planning a big 2500 word feature on it soon...

Matt

If you've still got your original copy of XP lying around Adamskii, then you could go the upgrade route, as Microsoft have now said they're ignoring the work-around:

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2007/02/07/microsoft_to_ignore_vista_upgrade_loophole/

Matt

Hmm interesting. Do you know if the upgrade version of vista would allow either 64 or 32 bit? Any idea? Haven't got the time to look it up this second. Might well be beneficial to get the upgrade version seen as I amazingly have a retail version of XP.

Adamskii

99% sure it does come with both 32-bit and 64-bit. In fact, most discs sold come with all versions on, but your product key determines which version it'll install from the disc.

Are you willing to spend another £100 for an upgrade version, just to get around the OEM issues?

Matt

Prob not, especially if it is as easy as they say to reactivate it. Ill read up on it a bit more, not that I have a penny to my name at the mo.

Adamskii

I wouldn't worry - I ordered my copy of Vista last Friday and it still hasn't arrived... so by the time you can afford it, I would have probably just received it.

Matt

^hehe. My dog died yesterday :( R.I.P Sally aged about 17. On a lighter note, did it snow? No snow here just pissed it down. I guess that's what I have to deal with now im in a tropical climate.

Adamskii

Not much snow, but as I was leaving Lincoln for work this morning it was getting really bad.

Apparently we're meant to be getting the heavy stuff around 3pm, but it looks like it's all cleared up here at work. My parents have it real bad in Windsor though - very deep snow, the worst in years.

I am all for global warming - I bet our grandchildren will thank us one day for making Britain like the Caribbean...

Matt

I agree Global warming = Hot stuff. On the down side we will start to get massive killer insects and we will all go bald, even women as we wont need the hairs to keep warm.

LordByron

We'll evolve into, well, more evolved humans. Maybe we'll grow fins and gills to adapt to the rise in water levels too?

Matt

wooohoooo i get a pay rise next week, not sure how much but the HR woman said its good. Funny if its only 20p an hour more or something as i only got 15p last time. You gots to move up to Lincoln Madam would be fun.

LordByron

Woooooooooo woo! Good job mans, hopefully it'll be loads and you could buy a house and an Aston Martin. Madman will move up one day soon, once he realises it's where we all belong...

Matt

If I got a jobber in Lincoln then the chance of me moving would increase 100%.
