Whilst browsing Gamestation for some new games (woah!), I stumbled across Warcraft III, along with the Frozen Throne expansion, for £3.99 (bogof, used)! A few minutes later and I realised that there wasn't anything else worth picking up, so I purchased the two.
You may have read that I've been looking for decent games to play over the LAN at home, as by mid-September there will be 4 of us living in the house, each with our own computer - ideal for some late-night gaming.
Warcraft III is famous for its LAN abilities, so last night as an alternative to Age of Empires, we decided to try it out. To cut a long story short, I won (again!), but the game was a lot more entertaining for both of us.
Warcraft III is another RTS, just like AOE, but whereas AOE requires you to spend time building up a huge army and then attack - Warcraft III allows you to attack pretty much constantly, improving as you go. The building and gathering elements of the game are relatively simple too, allowing the gamer to quickly re-establish a unit if needed.
Tonight we'll hopefully have another go, getting used to the game a bit more. I've also located my copy of Red Alert 2, which will add a bit more variety to the RTS collection. Dawn of War is somewhere, but I reckon it wont run smoothly enough on the SFF PCs and may be too fast paced/gory for some.
The only problem is, we're still on RTS games. Maybe that's a good thing, afterall the gameplay is essentionally the same from game-to-game. I'll be happier when we're all playing Counter-Strike : Source though...
