I've tried it in the past, but never seen the need for it - what with Windows being able to do everything I need.

However, as I've started putting together my mini-itx PC, powered by a super-slow-super-low-power CPU (<600MHz), with a 2.2GB Microdrive and 384MB RAM, I have come to realise that XP may not be suitable.

This afternoon I've been getting to grips with DSL (Damn Small Linux), which is damn small. At 50MB it's less than 1% the size of a bloated XP install! So far I've successfully partitioned the 2.2GB Microdrive for Linux and it's currently running Memtest to ensure the old SD-RAM sticks I found lying around, are good to go.

Then tomorrow, whilst hungover, I'll begin installing DSL itself - and see how it performs. Afterall, I only need Firefox working, along with Remote Access to my server - situated in the loft.

I feel geekier than normal, as Linux is the epitome of geekdom.

ok geekman i want a webpage to display folder items. this folder is going to have PDF files plonked inside it. I need to link to a webpage that shows whatever is in this folder and people can click on items and download them. Any idea? shouldnt be too tricky but cant think that keywords to google. Help me grow my inner geek.

Make that 128MB RAM (-8MB of Shared Video = 120MB)!

Memtest threw up over 350 errors on both sticks and the DSL install didn't like the 256MB. Sounds like I've got 2 sticks of 128MB Samsung PC133 on their way to me.

Bah, if only Linux wasn't so geeky, I've got it running now, but no idea how to get into the damn thing...

Matt

So you want this sorta thing? But full of PDF files? Or do you want a webpage full of links to PDF files to download?

Matt

the links option would be better but only if the links list could update update so that when a new pdf was put in the folder it would display. I guess if that's not an option then the 1st method might have to do, its just that it don't look good! Basically this is so that the headteacher of the school can put newsletters on the website for parents to download. I figured that if i could make a folder he could slap them into it would be best because he doesn't understand websites and webpages. Im dreading coming up with a way of explaining how to do it. This just seemed like the simplest option.

p.s. so the RAM was duff?^

adamskiis

The RAM isn't great. I'm having problems getting DSL to boot correctly too, but got some more time to have a bash at it today.

As for the directory, the simplest way would be the first method, but as you say it looks shite - you could put it within a frameset on a page, like this (click on files directory), but let me look for an alternative method...

Matt

I've got some people working on it, so will get back to you when I have an answer Adamskiis. The advantages of being in the web-mafia...

Matt

People working on it?! I'm scared!

adamskiis

OK, my people (who were working on it) came up with a decent php script, problem is that it wont work on my server for some reason. I'll email you it with instructions - see if you can get it to work.

Matt

ok i look forward to it

adamskiis

Matt

ok that seems to have worked. hotmail prob is scanning it thinking its a virus

adamskii

hmm what shall i do with that code and table just slap it on the design section of dreambeaver?

adamskii

Oh, rename the file to index.php and slap it in the directory where the pdf's are - then see if it displays them differently or if you get an error when you visit the page.
