Some of you will remember the dreaded Star Wars Galaxies, otherwise known as SWG. Myself and Adam (along with my brother soon after) spent nearly a year of our lives lost to the game...

Luckily, with some help from our friends, we overcame the addiction and went on to complete our 3 year degree and graduate.

Personally, I've not even thought about logging back in, as I now know how much of a time sink it is - all MMORPG's in general are addicitive - Ben is still playing WoW since release and he has 4 Level 60 characters apparently, with a 5th in the works.

But, someone mentioned to me a few months back a project known as SWGEmu - short for Star Wars Galaxies Emulation. It appears that the current players are so fed up with how bad the game has become, that they've started creating their own, in order to bring SWG back in-line with the good ol' days (or not, as the case may be).

SWGEmu can be found here, and while searching through Google - I came across OpenSWG, which appears to be behind SWGEmu, as they're still trying to get a server up and running. SWGEmu even has a Mods website, dedicated to the modifications for the emulator.

With OpenSWG, it appears that YOU have to manually compile a server, which seems a lot of hassle. But SWGEmu already has many videos up on YouTube showing people running around.

You'll be pleased to know that I've not (yet) downloaded and played around with SWGEmu, as I don't have endless amounts of spare time any more. But hopefully someone (adamskii) who is bored, could try it out and let us all know?!?

http://www.swgservers.com/ appears to provide more information too - there are various communities around the 'net who all appear to be running their own servers. If I was really bored and had 100's of hours spare, I'd setup my own server...

Update #2:

I've been browsing the sites a bit more and it seems SWGEmu is the one to go for - OpenSWG is post combat upgrade, which defeats the object. SWGEmu is pre combat upgrade, up to patch 12.1/13. I'm 75% sure this is about the time that we quit the game, prior to the combat upgrade kicking in. As I type, I'm downloading all patches up to 13 and also the client - purely for research purposes...

HAHHAHAHAHAHA Ok this is soooo fucking weird man. Just before Christmas I heard about SWGEMU, in fact I thought it would be a funny thing to get on the server and make a Christmas Suprise. As it happens I DID get on that server, however I was having serious graphical corruption and couldnt see a dam thing, the whole screen was grey. I could hear everything fine tho. I changed the settings to turn down the shader version. I managed to get on the server again and was able to see my HUD, so was typing to some chumps in the area asking them whats up with my graphics. They didnt know and proceeded to mock me by doing some crotch thrusts and dances. In the end I gave it up recorded no footage, uninstalled the whole lot again, deleted the patches. I guess I had downloaded a corrupt patch so couldnt be arsed to redownload because my internet here is turd. Anyway...... wow that is just weird.

Wow! That is weird... I thought you'd mock me at the thought of messing around with the game again - but you beat me to it! Meaning that, in theory, I could mock you first!

But, I'll be trying it out this evening, or tomorrow - purely for research purposes. They're still working on the whole thing, trying to get everything to work as intended. I watched a few SWGEmu in-game videos and they looked good.

Addict for life i guess, maybe its a relapse? I wanted to run the game on max settings, something which at the time seemed impossible. Oh and i wanted to get on a server that allowed moderator commands so I was gonna cheat to heck and try out some stuffs. As far as mocking goes, I guess we will have to leave that for Si, Cath and Rach. I was gonna make a whole big spoof swg video for a crimbo pressie, shame that didnt happen.

On a side note has anybody see Craig David lately? Well hes been on the ghetto workout and hes now a beef cake, i cant be arsed finding pics but im sure youll check for yourself.
